What is Oral HPV?

HPV is an STD caused by Human Papillomavirus. Some people tend to confuse the names as HPV is also a virus causing STD with the most commonly known STD – HIV. In fact, HIV and HPV are completely different STDs caused by different viral agents.

Oral HPV most commonly spreads through unprotected oral sex or touching your mouth with unwashed hands after sex with an HPV-infected partner. Other than Oral HPV, the virus can also transmit via skin-to-skin contact and can see symptoms in your genitals including penis, vagina, cervix, rectum, and groin area.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are nearly 48 million adults in the US has HPV in the year 2018 alone.

Oral HPV Symptoms

There are more than 100 different types of HPV STD. Not all HPV strains cause symptoms around the mouth. Most of the HPV strains are not life-threatening or serious. Certain HPV types like type 6, 11, 16, and 18 can lead to severe health conditions such as mouth cancer.

Oral HPV Warts

Most commonly reported oral HPV signs in both men and women are warts around the mouth, inside the mouth (upper mouth), and tonsils. HPV warts are small flesh that looks like cauliflower growing around the mouth

HPV type 16 and 18 can turn into oropharyngeal cancer or oral cancer, however, this is rare. Oral cancer cells can develop from the HPV STD and can cause symptoms in the middle of the throat, including the tongue, tonsils, and pharynx walls. Symptoms of oropharyngeal cancer include:

  • persistent sore throats
  • coughing up blood
  • enlarged lymph nodes
  • growths or lumps on the neck
  • hoarseness
  • lumps on the cheeks
  • trouble swallowing
  • unexplained weight loss

If you are sexually active and experiencing any of the above symptoms then you need to get tested for oral HPV as quickly as possible. When it comes to STDs, the sooner the diagnosis the better it is for your health.

Oral HPV and Cancer

If HPV in mouth is left untreated, it can lead to oropharyngeal cancers. Nearly 15,000 people get oral cancer due to HPV as the source cause, a study finds. However, this again comes down to the types of HPV strain you are affected with. Not all oral HPV infected person has diagnosed for oral cancer.

If you have HPV-16, then there are high chances of oral HPV warts and other symptoms turning into oral cancer. This high-risk variant is the cause behind nearly two-thirds of oropharyngeal cancers.

Does Oral HPV Go Away?

Unlike other infections, STDs such as HPV are a virus-infected disease that is going to persist with you or recur after a certain period of time. Oral HPV doesn’t go away, even though the symptoms disappear it doesn’t define that you are cured of HPV. The virus maintains a low profile and keeps manipulating, later you may experience an outbreak of warts on your skin and around the mouth.

Thus, oral HPV needs to be treated or controlled with antibiotics. The HPV warts can be removed with surgery.

Treatment for Oral HPV

The HPV warts can be removed. Your physician may recommend any of the following methods to treat oral HPV warts:

  • Surgical removal
  • Cryotherapy (wart is frozen and removed)
  • Interferon alfa-2B (Intron A, Roferon-A) injection

If you develop oral cancer due to HPV, treatment options are available. Your treatment and prognosis will be prescribed as per your stage and location of your cancer.

HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers have better outcomes after treatment and fewer recurrences than HPV-negative cancers. Treatment for oral cancer includes radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, or a combination of these.

Are there any Preparations Required Before the Oral HPV Test?

There are no special preparations required before the Oral HPV testing. You can continue with your regular activities and diet as a regular day.

It is highly recommended not to wipe the infected area around the mouth or the HPV warts before taking the sample.

How to Get Tested for Oral HPV?

Firstly, you need to take an initial screening test for the oral HPV that you suspect of having exposed to (i.e. based on the symptoms you experience like oral warts). HPV test uses a cotton swab to take a sample from the infected area such as the mouth, or throat. If you are tested HPV positive, an advanced test might be required to know the exact stage of your infection and to decide the treatment accordingly.
